During the third quarter of Super Bowl 10, Dallas Cowboys safety Cliff Harris infamously taunted Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Roy Gerela for missing a game-tying field goal, which prompted Steelers linebacker Jack Lambert to grab Harris and slam him to the turf.
Lambert's iconic throwdown of Harris arguably shifted the momentum in the game, as Pittsburgh sparked a fourth quarter rally and outlasted Dallas to win their first Super Bowl title. And one of Lambert's legendary teammates still gets riled up over the incident.
"It still pisses me off even thinking about that, that someone would do that. Lambert handled that in the right way. He handled that in the Steelers' way," Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris told The DA Show on Wednesday. "That was Steelers football. People would say they were hard-nosed, but they could never win a game. So, how sweet was it when we were hard-nosed, playing Steelers football, and winning games and winning championships?
"I remember going into our championship game against the Raiders, and everybody saying we don't have a chance, that the Super Bowl was the game before that -- with them and Miami -- and what are the Steelers doing going to Oakland? And [head coach] Chuck Noll had a meeting with us and told us then and there, 'Hey guys, the best team in the NFL is sitting right here in this room.' And I'll tell you what, that changed everything. It changed the whole mindset of everyone. And we went out there and we did what we had to do."
Following the Super Bowl, when Lambert was asked about his scuffle with Harris, he told reporters, "We're the Pittsburgh Steelers. We're supposed to be the intimidators." Lambert won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year during that 1974 season, and two years later, at the age of 24, he won the league's Defensive Player of the Year award.
In 11 NFL seasons, Lambert was named to nine Pro Bowls, and he played in six AFC championship games and won four Super Bowl titles with Pittsburgh as a member of the 1970s 'Steel Curtain.'
On Thursday, the Steelers and Cowboys will play in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, marking the beginning of 2021 preseason action. According to the William Hill Sportsbook, Dallas is currently the favorite to win the NFC East, while Pittsburgh has the third-best odds to win the AFC North.
