Army recruiting warns of fake texts about the draft

Recruiting fraud alert

U.S. Army Recruiting Command wants everyone to know they are not sending out text messages about a draft. In fact, there is no draft. And even if there were to be a draft — for the first time since 1973 — it wouldn't come from Army recruiting.

USAREC has been contacted by individuals regarding a number of "fraudulent text messages informing individuals they have been selected for a military draft."

The texts contain messages including "we tried contacting you through mail several times," "you've been marked eligible and must come to the nearest branch," and "we're aware that this number is not disconnected, you'll be fined and sent to jail for minimum 6 years if no reply."

USAREC is not sending these messages, it said in a statement, and "wants to ensure Americans understand these texts are false and were not initiated by this command or the U.S. Army."

How do the draft, recall to duty and stop-loss work?

In fact, if there were a draft, the messaging would not come from the Army at all — the Selective Service System would enact the draft. And, according to them, everything is "business as usual."

Army recruiting operations are similarly proceeding as normal, the statement concluded.
