Are military veterans better than civilians?

As veterans, are we better than fellow citizens who go about their lives seemingly not caring about violence and oppression in other parts of the world – and the military people trying to make a difference in those places?  It’s a question many vets mull as they return to life at home.

Sometimes vets “see this gleeful innocence that hasn’t been stomped out in some of these people,” says Mark McKenna of Student Veterans of America, “and they’re like, ‘but you don’t understand, there’s something you’re missing out there.’”  On CBS Eye on Veterans, Mark and I talked about these feelings, and what they mean for the state of relations between civilians and military people in the U.S.:
