First responders at hospitals throughout South Florida got a salute for their service during the COVID-19 pandemic from the Coast Guard during a May 23 honor flight.
An HC-144 Sentry airplane crew from Coast Guard Air Station Miami and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew flew over several hospitals on Saturday, according to a news release.
“It was a great flight today,” said Lt. Cmdr. Eric Vryheid, MH-65 Dolphin helicopter pilot at Coast Guard Air Station Miami.
The flight also served to commemorate Memorial Day and the lives of those who have been lost while serving in the military, Vryheid said.
“It was great to do the formation flight this weekend, Memorial Day weekend, because not only are we thanking the first responders, the nurses, doctors that are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, but also to honor the military veterans that went before us.”
Blue Angels, Thunderbirds take to skies together
The Navy’s Blue Angels and the Air Force Thunderbirds have conducted similar salutes across the country.
