The Navy Exchange Service will close its barber and beauty shops for at least the next 14 days in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
“At NEXCOM, we will continue to strictly follow all guidance set forth by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention for the safety and care of our patrons and associates alike,” said retired Rear Adm. Robert J. Bianchi, chief executive officer of NEXCOM.
The order directing the closures was issued March 23. All shops have 24 hours in which to comply.
In a release announcing the closings, Bianchi noted that space is limited in the shops, making it difficult for both staff and customers to practice safe social distancing. The facility at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois is not impacted by the closure. It will remain open to ensure that recruits have access to haircuts.
The decision to close the shops follows the release of a Navy order that temporarily relaxes hair grooming standards.
