The mandatory suspension of all Honor Flight Network trips has been extended through.h Sept. 1.
The extension comes in response to guidance from Virginia, Maryland and District of Columbia officials in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, a release from the Honor Flight network said.
The latest extension brings the number of Honor Flight trips that have been postponed due to the pandemic to 170.
“Every year, the Honor Flight Network takes more than 20.000 veterans to Washington, D.C.to see the national memorials built in their honor,” the organization said in an earlier release.
A majority of the veterans who are flown in served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam and are at high-risk for contracting the deadly respiratory illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
“Many of the veterans also live in community settings, such as retirement homes and assisted living facilities, where the risk of spreading the illness is extremely high,” the release continues. In-person events continue to be suspended through May 31.
Participants with questions about their flight should contact their local Honor Flight hub.
