The United States Air Force became its own branch of the U.S. Armed Forces with the passing of the National Security Act of 1947 on September 18 — making it 72 years old today.
Here are six things about the Air Force that kick ass:
"Up until that time we weren't able to do it," Yeager said at the 65th-anniversary celebration at Nellis Air Force Base in 2012. "Finally, in Oct. 14, 1947, we succeeded, and that opened up the doors of space to us."
Happy birthday, Air Force. Keeping being you.
