Texas Gov. Greg Abbott will present the Governor’s Medal of Courage on Monday to the Army National Guard veteran who killed the gunman who shot two parishioners to death at the West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement last month.

Jack Wilson, 71, discussed joining the Army National Guard in 1965 while working at the Hood County Sheriff’s Department in a Facebook comment following the Dec. 29 incident. He also said he held several Department of Defense security clearances between 1965 and 1995.

Wilson heads the church’s security team and is also a firearms instructor, according to numerous media reports.  The gunman killed church volunteers Richard White and Anton “Tony” Wallace before Wilson’s single-shot took him out.
