Lance Cpl. Alexa Barth has become the first female Marine to earn the recon military occupational specialty according to the Marine Corps Times.

Barth graduated from the 12-week Basic Reconnaissance Course (BRC) and earned the 0321 recon military occupational specialty. She still has several more training courses to attend a Marine Corps public affairs office said but is expected to arrive at 1st Recon Battalion in early 2020.

BRC is a challenging introductory course that teaches the basics of Marine Reconnaissance. The course curriculum includes training Marines how to conduct amphibious and ground recon operations from planning through execution, how to arrange for helicopter landings and parachute drops, how to call for fire support, conduct bomb damage assessments, and limited scale raids.

According to the MOS manual, a recon Marine possesses specialized training: "in addition to basic infantry skills, he possesses proficiency in scout swimming, small boat operations, and refined observation, scouting, patrolling, and long-range communication skills. Reconnaissance Men receive advanced training as Static Line and Military Freefall Parachutists and Jumpmasters, as well as Combatant Divers and Diving Supervisors."

Historically, the attrition rate for Marines going through BRC is about 50%.

Marine Recon is known for its "green side" operations, meaning that they are experts at small teams patrolling and acting as scouts for larger Marine formations on the battlefield.
