Special Forces Soldiers killed in Afghanistan identified

The two U.S. soldiers killed in Afghanistan on Saturday have been identified.

Sgt. 1st Class Javier Jaguar Gutierrez and Sgt. 1st Class Antonio Rey Rodriguez were both supporting Operation Freedom's Sentinel in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan when they were killed while engaged in combat operations.

Both soldiers were assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) out of Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. 

The team from 7th Special Forces Group was ambushed while conducting a Key Leader Engagement (KLE) in Sherzad, Afghanistan. Six additional service members were wounded in the attack when an Afghan dressed in an Afghan army uniform opened fire.

"We are still collecting information and the cause or motive behind the attack is unknown at this time," said a statement from U.S. Forces- Afghanistan. "The incident is under investigation."

Six U.S. service members have been killed in Afghanistan since the start of 2020, including this weekends casualties. In 2019, 22 U.S. service personnel died in combat there.
