Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan is no longer on the road to being confirmed as the next official defense chief.

President Trump revealed the news on Twitter Tuesday, saying his departure is "so that he can devote more time to his family."

Shanahan took over in January after then-Defense Secretary James Mattis stepped down from his position in December, citing multiple disagreements with the president. He resigned a day after Trump overruled his advice against pulling service members out of Syria.

Prior to the president's announcement, USA Today published an article highlighting that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has been examining a 2010 domestic incident involving Shanahan and his then-wife. The Pentagon has been without an official leader since last winter and now Secretary of the Army Mark Esper will now take over as the news Acting Secretary of Defense.
