During his third State of the Union Address, President Donald Trump assured the nation that the United States was working to bring its soldiers home from Afghanistan and end America's longest war — and he didn't waste any time getting started.
"War places a heavy burden on our nation's extraordinary military families, especially spouses like Amy Williams from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and her 2 children — 6-year-old Elliana and 3-year-old Rowan," Trump said.
Williams, who was in attendance with both Elliana and Rowan, has been managing her family, volunteer work, and job for the past 7 months while her husband, Sergeant First Class Townsend Williams, is in Afghanistan on his fourth deployment to the Middle East, Trump explained.
"Amy's kids have not seen their father's face in many months. Amy, your family's sacrifice makes it possible for all of our families to live in safety and peace -- we thank you," Trump said.
But Williams didn't know her family's wait was over.
"There is one more thing," Trump said. "Tonight we have a very special surprise. I am thrilled to inform you that your husband is back from deployment. He is here with us tonight and we couldn't keep him waiting any longer."
Williams turned to find her husband descending the stairs of the chamber of the United States House of Representatives behind her.
