The 37-year-old Houston City, Missouri man who allegedly randomly fired into traffic on a bridge near the Army base at Fort Leavenworth has been charged with attempted first-degree murder. Master Sgt. David Royce, who is stationed at Fort Leavenworth, used his car to hit the suspect and end the shooting.

Jason Randell Westrem also faces four counts of firing into an occupied vehicle, two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of aggravated endangerment of a child, the Associated Press reports. The charges were filed Friday.

Two children were passengers in a vehicle that came under fire on the Centennial Bridge on May 27.

Another soldier was struck by gunfire during the incident. That soldier and the suspect remain hospitalized, according to  Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.

Leavenworth police officers initially thought they were responding to a road rage incident on the bridge. They soon learned that Westrem had allegedly been using multiple weapons to fire randomly at vehicles.

Royce had been waiting in traffic when he saw what was happening and acted.
