Filming is underway this week aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), according to The Virginan Pilot.
“This opportunity is one of many aircraft carrier embarks planned pierside and at sea on both coasts ... the crew of USS Abraham Lincoln are excited to play a small role in bringing this story back to the silver screen and inspiring another generation to serve in the world’s finest Navy," Naval Air Force Atlantic spokesman Cmdr. Dave Hecht told the Virginian Pilot.
Tom Cruise first gave us a glimpse of his return to Maverick glory, in a twitter post back in May.
While Navy officials said no actors were aboard the Lincoln for this film shoot, Tom Cruise did share a classic story about filming the original Top Gun, with Jimmy Kimmel.
"The pilot who flew me was named Bozo," laughed Cruise. He went on to describe a day which included 3 different flights in the Navy's legendary F/14 fighter jets. "I remember first flight in the morning, we were going really hard, we did 9 and a half G's ... I had a vomit bag right down here by my ankle. So in between takes, I'd quickly lean down to empty my guts. The second I did that, he pulls up. So my head from the pressure, my helmet was literally pressed to the ground. I was trying to tell him, 'Bozo, Bozo, Bozo' and he just kept pulling up and up and up. So finally he released ... and I was like 'Bozo what's the matter with you man? Couldn't you see, you pulled up and my head was hitting the floor!' And he goes, 'Well I told you, they don't call me Bozo for nothing.'"
We're guessing there will need to be some serious diet and exercise if they plan on remaking the classic volleyball scene.
In July, Variety reported that the sequel entitled "Top Gun: Maverick," will star Miles Teller, who will play the role of Goose's son, and Maverick's protoge.
No word on whether or not his mouth will, "write checks his body can't cash."
Variety also reported the reboot will look at the world of drone technology and the end of dogfighting. The sequel is scheduled to release July 12, 2019
In the meantime, we'll be patiently waiting for this film to take our breath away.
