U.S. Naval forces near the Gulf of Oman received two separate distress calls at 6:12 a.m. local Bahrain time and a second one at 7:00 a.m. from shipping vessels after a reported attack. According to a statement from the U.S. 5th Fleet Public Affairs, the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Bainbridge assisted.
The attacks left one of the oil tankers on fire and the other adrift. The U.S. Navy evacuated sailors from the vessels and helped transport them to hospitals when necessary. The ship owners offered no additional information to clarify the details of the incident. Cmdr. Joshua Frey, a 5th Fleet spokesman, also offered no additional details.
This is just the most recent mysterious incident involving tankers as the U.S. and Iran face tense negotiations, according to Associated Press. Over the past two months, President Donald Trump has deployed personnel and equipment to Iran while also claiming the U.S. is not actively preparing for conflict with Iran.
