On what would have been his 95th birthday, the U.S. Postal Service issued a new commemorative Forever stamp honoring former President George H.W. Bush.

Bush -- the 41st president --  died in November 2018.

Family and friends say the stamp is a fitting tribute to a man who was a prolific letter writer.

Bush was a WWII Navy hero who worked in the oil business before entering politics but then went on to serve his country as an ambassador, director of the CIA, vice president and eventually president. He led a multinational coalition that forced Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait during the Persian Gulf War.

The stamp's image, which was painted by artist Michael J. Deas, is based on a photograph of Bush that appeared on a cover of Texas Monthly magazine in 1997.

The Forever stamp never expires and is equal in value to the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce price. A sheet of 20 stamps cost $11 and can be purchased online here, or at your local post office.
