PHOTOS: American Legion, National Guard provide flooding assistance in midwest

Across the midwest, National Guard units and the American Legion have been working to respond to flooding in Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Illinois.

In the week since the flooding started at Fort Gibson, Okla., members of American Legion Post 20 have provided more than 15,000 meals to citizens and first responders — and they plan to continue providing this support for a while.

"There's going to be a need for quite a while," the posts' vice commander Jim Quinn said.

About 200 soldiers from Illinois have also been activated in response to the floods and another 200 are on standby. More than 250 soldiers from Oklahoma have also been activated. Guardsmen have been assisting with swift water rescue, filling and distributing sandbags, and delivering purified water.
