PHOTOS: Military Working Dogs are the stars of new USPS Forever stamps
There was barking and tail wagging galore Thursday as the U.S. Postal Service’s newest forever stamp honoring military working dogs was unveiled at the Military Working Dog Monument at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas.
Retired Army Ranger and 28th Postmaster of San Antonio Robert D. Carr said the stamps depict the four most common breeds of MWDs – the German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever, Belgian Malinois, and Dutch Shepherd, according to an Air Force release.
“It was my privilege to be in the 82nd Airborne in the Ranger battalion to work alongside the dog handlers and their military working dogs and see them in action in real-world environments,” he said. “It’s amazing what these animals can do.”
Carr and the 341st Training Squadron commander Maj. Matt Kowalski unveiled the stamps during the ceremony. Military working dogs work with handlers in narcotics, explosives and intruder detection.
The Defense Department’s military working dog program has been based at JBSA-Lackland since 1958, according. The Military Working Dog Veterinary Service and the Holland Working Dog Hospital are also located on the base.
The postal service officially unveiled the stamp at the American Philatelic Society’s 133rd annual convention Aug. 1, in Omaha, Nebraska.
“The stylized digital illustrations are in red, white, blue and gold to represent the American flag and patriotism,” the Postal Service explains.
