An inspiring and inclusive bicycling challenge this weekend shined a light on how adaptive sports is helping military veterans thrive.
And Audacy’s own Brian Mitchell, a former running back for the then-Washington Redskins and co-host of BMitch and Finlay on 106.7 The Fan, raised $31,286 for World T.E.A.M. Sports and its Face of America: Gettysburg challenge, making him the event’s first place fundraiser this year.
“I rode with them last year and really fell in love with it and I’ll probably be doing it from now on,” he said.
Mitchell raised $16,801 last year and had set a goal of raising $30,000 this year because he wore the number 30 when he played for Washington.
“My dad was in the military and I want to put my best foot forward,” he said. “This would make him proud.”
The race began on April 21 in Arlington, Virginia and ended up more than 108 miles later in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on April 23.
Over 75 of the race participants were military veterans who live with injuries or conditions such as limb loss, paralysis, blindness, post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury,
Mitchell noted that approximately one in eight people in the United States have some form of a disability and that over 706,000 of the nation’s armed forces have sought or received service-related injury compensation since 2001.
He stressed that World T.E.A.M. recognizes those service members and makes a special effort to provide them with exceptional outdoor sporting challenges and support.
The bike ride event has been held annually since 2006 and has raised $650,000 to support World T.E.A.M.
