The U.S. Capitol police officer and Iraq War veteran killed during the Jan. 6 insurrection has been laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.

Brian Sicknick, 42, died Jan, 7 of injuries he sustained while responding to the incident.

Mourners, including President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, paid their respects to the fallen officer Tuesday at the Capitol Rotunda, where he laid in honor.

“The family of U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick thanks the Congressional leadership for bestowing this historic honor on our fallen American hero,” Sicknick’s family said in a statement. “Knowing our personal tragedy and loss is shared by our nation brings hope for healing.”

Authorities previously said that Sicknick was struck in the head by a fire extinguisher while "physically engaging" with rioters at the Capitol on Jan. 6. After returning to his division, Sicknick collapsed and died at the hospital as a result of his injuries the next day.

Before joining the Capitol Police 12 years ago, Sicknick served with the New Jersey Air National Guard with the 108th Security Force Squadron, 108th Wing, at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

Sicknick’s six years of military service included overseas deployments in support of Operation Southern Watch and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sicknick was one of five people who died as a result of the rioting. Authorities are continuing to investigate his death.
