The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles now allows United States veterans or the National Guard to add a new veteran indicator to its driver’s license or identification card.

Governor John Carney signed the House Bill into law over the fall, eliminating the need for a veteran to carry a separate card or official discharge forms in order to prove their service.

“There are nearly 80,000 veterans living in Delaware and this new indicator provides our veterans with a convenient way to provide proof of military service,” said Representative Nnamdi Chukwuocha.

The Veteran indicator is also designed to afford veteran protection as they will no longer have to carry a DD-214, which contains sensitive information, to prove their veteran status, in order to obtain the benefits provided by local businesses and organizations.

All 50 states, along with Puerto Rico, now offer the veteran indication.

The Veteran indicator designation is available to any Delaware Veteran that served in the U.S. military and was honorably discharged. To obtain the veteran indicator one must have a valid Delaware driver's license or identification card and provide proof of military service, by presenting any of the following original documents:

Military ID
NGB-22
DD-214
DD- 256
Honorable Discharge Certificate
Valid out-of-state driver license with veteran designation

“The Delaware Department of Transportation and the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles proudly recognize the contributions and sacrifices of those who have faithfully served our country and represented our great state," the Secretary of Transportation Nicole Majeski said. ”The veteran indicator is designed to verify an individual as a veteran in the State of Delaware so that businesses and organizations can recognize their contributions as well.”

The word “VETERAN” is in red capital letters underneath the date of birth on the license. The designation is not a replacement for a military ID card, and veterans would still need to show that ID at other times to receive services.

Veterans who are renewing, changing their address, or purchasing a duplicate driver license or identification card may add the indicator at no additional charge at any DMV location.

Those who are already updating their license for a renewal, address change, or other reason can add the marking at no additional charge, but there is a $10 fee to just have it added at any other time.

The veteran indicator on a driver license or identification card can be obtained at all DMV locations.

Hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Wednesday from 11:00 am to 7:00 p.m.
