(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Navy sailor from Illinois will be buried Tuesday at Arlington National Cemetery.

Herbert Jacobson was a 21-year-old from Grayslake when he finished basic training at Great Lakes and eventually reported to the USS Oklahoma in Pearl Harbor.

On Dec. 7, 1941, the battleship took several torpedo hits and quickly capsized. Jacobson and 428 of his shipmates were killed.

It wasn’t until recent years that many of them had been identified through DNA and anthropological testing.

As of June 2021, 338 members of the Oklahoma had been identified.

Jacobson, a Fireman 3rd Class, was identified in 2019, but the pandemic forced the postponement of his burial at Arlington until this week.
