May is Military Appreciation Month, and with that in mind Connecting Vets will be running a series of profiles on veterans who have transitioned into the civilian world. We'll discuss their military career, how they transitioned, and what advice they would give to other vets going through the same.

For today's profile, we spoke to a veteran and colleague here at Audacy who continues to serve in the Coast Guard.

"After Katrina, I was inspired to join after watching how important the Coast Guard was in saving the people in New Orleans including members of my family," Steve Suter told Connecting Vets. "I joined as a recruit and spent years training and studying to eventually elevate to Vice commander and Commander of my Flotilla. I have been deployed several times across the country mostly to help clear waterways after Hurricanes."

Suter wanted to personally thank his boss, Market Manager Dan Barron for allowing him to leave his work at Audacy on short notice when he has been called up to respond to emergencies with the Coast Guard.

Having served for 12 years in the Coast Guard, Steve had a number of qualifications as a member of a boat crew and a helicopter operations crew member.

"My latest missions have been to help train the Coast Guard helicopter pilots and swimmers to repel down to vessels to help injured people on board and how to lower pumps to help vessels that are taking on water," he said.
