Wondering where to move after transitioning from the service?

In celebration of the fifth year of its Best Of lists, Navy Federal Credit Union has released its Best Cities After Service 2022 list which showcases a variety set of locations across the country so that every service member can find the right fit for their home.

“This population of individuals is unique and with today’s economic challenges, it’s more important than ever that we support service members and their families as they approach this pivotal, often challenging, moment,” said retired Marine Col. and Navy Federal Regional Outreach Manager Claystackhouse.

Different from the last two iterations, this year’s list also features three sublists—Best Cities for Families With Children, Best Cities for Retired Vets and Best Cities to Buy a House.

In partnership with Sperling's Best Places, Navy Federal evaluated and ranked 400 U.S. cities across the country based on a variety of quality-of-life metrics including veteran community and cost of living to determine which ones best meet the needs of transitioning service members overall, and then specific to those with families, to those looking to retire from the workforce and for those looking to buy a home

The list was developed by taking into consideration a veteran’s average income, unemployment rates and proximity to Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals and military bases.

The top 5 cities identified as the best after military service this year are Charleston, South Carolina; Norristown, Pennsylvania;  Cambridge, Massachusetts;  San Diego, California and  Naples, Florida.

The top 5 best cities for military families include Fort Worth, Texas; Derry, New Hampshire; Norristown, Pennsylvania; Charleston, South Carolina and Columbus, Ohio.

The top 5 cities that are the best for retired veterans were identified as Tampa, Florida; Honolulu, Hawaii; Jacksonville, Florida; Norristown, Pennsylvania and Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The top 5 cities that are the best for veterans looking to purchase a house are Altoona, Pennsylvania; Florence, Alabama; Abilene, Texas; Elizabethtown, Kentucky and Muncie, Indiana
