Bialik holds a special place in every 90s kid’s heart as the actress who played the fun-loving character Blossom on television. While the spunky, full-of-life pre-teen character was relatable to many American kids, she was far from the type of person Bialik was growing up.

“I didn’t excel at like, competing audition-wise,” she said of her younger days in auditioning. “I was the kid who sat in the corner. I was so intimidated at auditions because I so didn’t look or feel like those girls.”

For a shy child who grew up in a rather sheltered household and felt she was a misfit, acting isn’t exactly the career you may have pegged for young Mayim. With a high stress on education in her household, but also encouragement to follow dreams, Mayim achieved both by earning her doctorate in neuroscience in 2007 from UCLA, followed by landing a role as Amy Farrah Fowler on the Big Bang Theory.

Bialik has now been presented the opportunity to marry her higher education with love for television as she steps in to host Jeopardy! — a show she admits she grew to love as an adult after never really watching it as a child.

“I can’t lie, I was not raised watching Jeopardy. I was raised in the kind of household where we didn’t really watch a lot of television. We watched a lot of like, sitcoms when my parents didn’t want to deal with us, but we didn’t do that as a family.”

Hear more about Bialik’s unique childhood experience as an actress, what her family life was like and more by tuning into the latest episode of Justin Long’s Life Is Short podcast.
