This week’s Women Owned Wednesday business is Step By Step & Farm 12!
An experience in college meeting a 6-year-old little girl who had fetal alcohol syndrome and was put in foster care because her mom was unable to care for her, led Krista to start Step By Step in 1997. For 28 years, Step By Step has had a contract with the Washington State's First Steps program to help babies be born healthy and get a healthy start to life in their first year. Our mission is to equip pregnant women, mothers, and families to positively impact generations.
Step By Step's nurses, dietitians, and counselors provide in-home visitation for about 1,200 low-income families a year across Pierce, King, Snohomish and Thurston counties.
Krista is also mom to 7 daughters, so life has been very busy for her! However, she really wanted to provide support for moms beyond the first year of their baby's life, support that would be truly transformational in the trajectory of their life and their babies life. So she decided to buy a farm and start social enterprises that would teach job and life skills and provide the wrap-around support they need to really flourish and thrive.
In 2015, Step By Step purchased the former Van Lierop Bulb Farm in Puyallup. In 2019, Farm 12 Restaurant and Events opened. In 2022, Fika Coffee and Pastry Shop opened. Their current project is under construction...an Early Learning Center for 140 infants to 5-year-olds, as we all know what crisis childcare is for all moms, but especially those struggling to make ends meet.
