A man was found after being kept away from the world by his mother for nearly three decades.

The 41-year-old Swedish man was found missing his teeth, covered in sores, and barely able to walk when a relative broke into his 70-year-old mother's home, the Daily Mail reports. Paramedics arrived at the scene and took the malnourished man to the hospital for treatment.

Hospital staff called police, and investigation was immediately opened to look into how this man ended up this way in the first place.

It's belived that the man has been held a prisoner in his mother's apartment since she took him out of school at age 12. The mother was described by another newspaper as "very overprotective" due to a prior "family incident." Whenever neighbors asked her how her son was doing, she'd say "fine" and change the subject before getting into detail.

For years, family members were suspicious that the mother had been controlling her son's life, but they didn't know to what extent. That's when, while the mother sought hospitalization for an unknown condition of her own, a relative broke into the apartment and discovered her son.

The mother has been arrested on suspicion of "illegal deprivation of liberty and causing bodily harm."
