Governor Gavin Newsom announced a regional stay-at-home order model for five regions across California in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

According to Fox 40, Newsom announced the new rule that applies to five different regions if or when they fall below 15% ICU capacity. The five regions are Northern California, Bay Area, Greater Sacramento, San Joaquin Valley, and Southern California.

While no regions currently meet the data that would require them to implement a stay-at-home order (as of December 3, 2020), Newsom's administration says they could be soon, adding that Northern California, Greater Sacramento, Jan Joaquin Valley, and Southern California could potentially enter the stay-at-home order as early as Friday, December 4. The Bay Area could potentially fall under the stay-at-home order by late December.

The following restrictions would apply during a stay-at-home order:

  • Restaurants are takeout/pickup only (no outdoor or indoor dining whatsoever)
  • Retail at 20% max capacity
  • Non-essential travel prohibited

Closures of the following businesses would occur:

  • Hair salons & barbershops
  • Personal care salons
  • Museums & zoos
  • Cinemas
  • Live sports
  • Playgrounds
  • Wineries & bars

Newsom also announced that the Sleep Train Arena surge facility is opening December 9 to serve 224 patients in the Greater Sacramento region.
