Witnessing millions of butterflies on top of a volcano is a rare experience, but it's something that you can see for yourself just north of Sacramento this summer.
According to Only In Your State, swarms of California Tortoiseshell butterflies make a pitstop during migration atop Lassen Peak. Typically the migration occurs around mid- to late-summer.
The exact number of butterflies varies, anywhere from hundreds to millions. But there's no denying that these bright orange butterflies on top of a mountain are a sight to be seen.
Mid-July is around the time the butterflies may start showing up, and sometimes they stick around until the end of August.
It's about a three-hour drive north to get to Lassen Peak from Sacramento. Plan your trip by getting more info here.
