The California State University system is requiring all students, faculty, and staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19 before fall classes, Fox 40 reports.

CSU officials announced on Tuesday that they made the decision "without waiting for any further action by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration" despite saying they'd wait for the greenlight earlier this year.

CSU Chancellor Joseph Castro cited the current surge in COVID cases due to the highly infectious delta variant as being a major player in this decision.

"Receiving a COVID vaccine continues to be the best way to mitigate the spread of the virus," said Castro. "We urge all members of the CSU community to get vaccinated as soon as possible, and announcing this requirement now allows members of the CSU community to receive multiple doses of a vaccine as we head into the beginning of the fall term."

The release, obtained by Fox 40, says that students, staff, and faculty must be able to show proof of vaccination by September 30.
