Out of the many places I've been wanting to explore in Northern California, this one is near the top of the list because it looks so peaceful. It's this spa with private saunas and outdoor hot tubs in an adorable setting that looks like something out of Shrek.
Several hours away from Sacramento in Arcata, California, is Finnish Country Sauna and Tubs and Cafe Mokka. The sauna and tubs are private, therefore clothing is optional.
The atmosphere is very serene, making it a great way to connect with nature while treating yourself to relaxation. Guests can also relax by the fireplace or at tables outside the cafe by the pond surrounded by birch and conifer trees.
According to their website, the sauna cabins have grass roofs and western red cedar interiors with benches at five levels. Plus, there's a natural light source. The hot tubs are made of Jarrah wood and are surrounded by trees and ferns.
At Cafe Mokka, you can enjoy all the coffee house favorites, including folk music and newspapers. The cafe is even mentioned in the George Orwell novel, Homage to Catalonia.
Before making a trip up there, make sure you have cash on you as their website states they accept cash or local checks only. Also, even though it's clothing optional, children are welcome there. (Private means the children won't see naked people in other saunas or hot tubs.)
Check out their website here and also get a feel for the vibe with pics on Instagram.
