Witnessing millions of butterflies on top of a volcano is a rare experience, but it's something that you can see for yourself just north of Sacramento this time of year.

According to Only In Your State, swarms of California Tortoiseshell butterflies swarm Lassen Peak typically around mid- to late-summer.

How many butterflies show up varies, but it could be anywhere from hundreds to millions. Regardless, there's no denying that seeing these bright orange butterflies on top of a mountain are a sight to be seen!

Mid-July is around the time the butterflies may start showing up, and they could stick around until the end of August.

Lassen Peak is about a three-hour drive north from Sacramento. Plan your trip with more info here. (Keep in mind that the Dixie Fire in 2021 caused closures for some facilities, infrastructure, and areas in Lassen Volcanic National Park. The link provided will give the latest information on closure status.)
