A travel-related case of monkeypox virus in Sacramento is under investigation by the Sacramento County Division of Public Health.

According to a press release, the virus made its way to Sacramento after the patient traveled to parts of Europe where presence of monkeypox was confirmed. While confirmation from CDC and CDPH is pending, preliminary testing and symptoms suggest that monkeypox confirmation is likely.

The patient is isolating and is not in contact with anyone. Risk to the general public is minimal.

Monkeypox virus is contracted when it enters the body through broken skin, respiratory tract, or the mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth). Diagnosis is very rare in the United States.
