I watched Motel Makeover on Netflix this weekend, and my thoughts on this show were pretty much echoed by the negative reviews on Twitter.
First of all, I want to say that I did watch the entire series and actually enjoyed it overall. I love the idea of flipping a Schitt's Creek-style motel and seeing it become a destination worth going to.
Basically, two girls flip an old motel in a Canadian beach town that they purchased right before the pandemic hit. Of course, the project is put on hold and then they're left scrambling to make funds back while working against a short timeline. Chaos ensues and they have many "moments." (Watch the trailer above to get an idea for what the show's like.)
However, here's what I didn't love so much...
1. Overkill on the #girlboss energy.
2. The fact that they renovated their own apartment before renovating the rest of the motel, while emphasizing that they have to make this project a success (i.e. there's a bottom line at stake), makes me feel like they really don't actually know what they're doing. When I lose trust in these fabulous ladies, I kind of lose trust in the show overall. I know editing is at play here, but it just makes them look stupid...and I hate that. (Because I know they are NOT stupid.)
I think other people's thoughts on Twitter pretty much speak for what the show is like as a whole, and so I'll just share some of those with you. I think it's worth watching, but just check these out so you don't feel alone.
