This just keeps getting more confusing.
A day after the 49ers shut down the club's facility in Santa Clara and placed four players on the Reserve/Covid-19 List come conflicting reports as to whether the initial test that set things in motion was a false positive.
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area has the details regarding the purported false positive.
Jennifer Lee Chan, also of NBC Sports Bay Area, adds the following context.
Meanwhile, in the wake of that twist, comes the update from the Bay Area News Group's Cam Inman that the NFL is denying the report that Bourne had a false positive. Bourne could even be facing discipline for a possible mask violation.
Here's how the story initially began on Wednesday morning:
Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area had the original scoop.
ESPN's Adam Schefter then reported that Kendrick Bourne had tested positive. The team later placed Bourne on the Reserve/Covid-19 List, which is for players who either test positive or who have been in close contact with an infected person. By the end of the day, Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and and Trent Williams had been added to the list, as well.
The 49ers followed up the reports with an official statement, which confirmed the positive test but did not name a specific player.
"The San Francisco 49ers were informed today that a player has tested positive for COVID-19 and the individual immediately went into self-quarantine. Our organization has entered the NFL's intensive protocol and we are working with the league on contact tracing to identify high risk individuals. All team functions will be conducted virtually today.
"The health and safety of our players, staff and community are the organization’s highest priority. We will continue to work closely with the NFL and medical professionals and will follow their direction."
The news came just a day before the 49ers were slated to host the Packers for Thursday Night Football from Levi's.
