Legendary sportscaster Bob Costas has poured cold water on the idea that he joined social media -- or ever will.
Twitter users buzzed this week when it appeared Costas had signed up to blast out his hot takes on the platform -- but the 67-year-old broadcaster's son quickly exposed the account as a fake.
Appearing Tuesday on the Rich Eisen Show, Costas had a good laugh at the prospect of mixing it up in the land of ratios and memes.
The 28-time Emmy Award winner and recipient of the Baseball Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick Award said he was bombarded with a deluge of texts from friends and relatives after the phony account popped up, some suggesting the occasion marked the end times, like when the Red Sox and Cubs finally halted their long World Series droughts.
"I’m here to assure you and everyone else that the fires of hell are still very much blazing," Costas quipped, "because I am absolutely not on Twitter.
"They have taken the bogus account down.”
The NBC Sports legend, who left the Peacock network in early 2019, then invoked one of the infamous episodes of his decorated career -- his memorable bout with conjunctivitis while covering the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
"I began thinking ‘You know, what would I have to do before I ever deigned to be on Twitter? Binge-watch The Real Housewifes of Orange County? Hire Rudy Giuliani as my personal attorney? Make a return trip to Sochi just for the nostalgia of the pink eye episode? Star in a sequel to Baseketball?"
"Or, just for you, Rich, make a special trip to the NFL combine. All those things will happen before I’m ever on Twitter.'”
While pink eye doesn't sound like very much fun, we wouldn't be opposed to a Baseketball sequel.
In any event, Costas this year joined CNN as a contributor, where he covers sports-related topics for the news and politics network. He also remains affiliated with MLB Network.
