Cheating has been around in baseball forever, says Darryl Strawberry, it’s just that now,
“We all know how to do it, but the Astros got caught because of all the TVs and monitors in the dugouts,” Strawberry said in an appearance on WFAN’s Moose and Maggie Show Thursday. “Back in my day, we didn’t have that, but you could stand on second base and steal signs, turn left or right to tell a guy whether a fastball or a curveball was coming. Cheating has been done forever, they just got caught because they went a little too overboard.”
High-tech espionage or not, though, that’s why Straw thinks Carlos Beltran, the alleged ringleader singled out for the Astros’ cheating scandal, deserves another chance to be an MLB manager, the same second chance Alex Cora and A.J. Hinch have both gotten.
“He should, because Carlos is a wonderful guy. Everybody makes mistakes and falls short in some areas, but I think he deserves another chance, no question about it,” Strawberry said. “I thought the Mets should have stuck with him, and looked at who he is as a person.”
And cheating aside, Beltran’s reputation for the first 90 percent of his career should supercede one mistake, according to a guy who admits he has made many.
“He’s a wonderful guy, a wonderful player, and a wonderful student of the game,” Strawberry said. “He will help so many young players learn how to play at the highest level, because that’s where he played.”
