Timmy Trumpet’s much-anticipated appearance Tuesday night at Citi Field, where his hit song “Narco” (a collaboration with Dutch EDM duo Blasterjaxx) has recently become a fan favorite, was spoiled by the first-place Dodgers, who, in beating the Mets 4-3, denied closer Edwin Diaz a chance to pitch the ninth inning.

Trumpet, who proudly declared himself a “Mets fan for life” after throwing out the first pitch and later performing an instrumental version of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh-inning stretch, had planned to play the trumpet solo that Diaz has entered games to all season. But thanks to the Dodgers, who, despite recent injuries to Walker Buehler, Tony Gonsolin and Clayton Kershaw remain unquestioned World Series favorites, Trumpet will have to try again, promising to give it one more go Wednesday night in Queens.
Maybe it was all his schedule allowed (his upcoming tour dates include stops in Italy, Singapore, England, Thailand, Germany, Mexico and the Netherlands), but you’d think the Mets would have chosen an easier opponent for such an occasion, instead hosting Trumpet this weekend against the lowly Nationals or when the Pirates visit later this month.
Regardless, the Mets have to like their chances with Jacob deGrom on the bump Wednesday night. The two-time Cy Young winner has been unstoppable, submitting a dominant 2.15 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings (14.1 K/9) since returning from a shoulder injury earlier this month. Even if there’s no save to be had, manager Buck Showalter should have plenty of incentive to use Diaz, who hasn’t appeared in a game since Friday night.
Though the Dodgers did their best to spoil it, Trumpet seemed to enjoy his experience Tuesday night, getting a chance to meet Diaz before the game, as he expressed in a lively interview with SNY sideline reporter Steve Gelbs. Raised on cricket in his native Australia, Trumpet claims Tuesday was the first baseball game he’s ever attended, though he promises it won’t be his last with the Sydney-born musician vowing to return if the Mets reach the World Series this fall.
