Has Steve Cohen’s Twitter interaction jumped the shark already?
Maybe, if you’re Marc Malusis, who took issue with the Mets owner’s Tweets on Monday, specifically regarding the Padres’ acquisition of Blake Snell from the Rays.
Here is what Cohen Tweeted about the trade:
To Moose, that’s just unnecessary, even if he’s simply stating something obvious about the state of the franchise.
“Snell is a different story when you look at what the Padres gave up,” Moose said. “I don’t need to hear from the owner about not getting Blake Snell, because I never thought they were getting Blake Snell. We know the Mets don’t have the assets to be able to entice a very forward-thinking Tampa Bay Rays team, so when that news came down, I wasn’t wondering why the Mets didn’t do that, until the Mets owner came out and Tweeted it.”
Maggie Gray tried to defend Cohen, stating he was simply reiterating a failure of the previous ownership and administration as an example of what he’s working with. However, to another point Moose made, Cohen tweeted last week that he would “have to ask (new GM) Jared Porter what’s going on” in the market and then replied to that, Tweeting “not much going out there due to the holidays” and “conversations hopefully pick up this week some.”
“He’s also tampered down expectations by saying we have to build this the right way, it’s not going to be free spending,” Moose said. “He’s getting pats on the back for that, and that’s fine, but isn’t that the owner tampering down expectations about what’s coming here?”
“I think they still are going to spend, and saying you’re trying to build the right way…isn’t that what every single owner in every single sport always says?” Maggie replied. “I have to think they’re still in on Bauer and Springer.”
Cohen has also continued his dry humor hijinks, reacting to a “Mets suck” tweet by saying “now you tell me, where were you before I bought the team” and replying to one Tweet saying he shouldn’t be so active on social media by saying “thanks for the sage advice.”
But, the question remains: when will Cohen and his team make another move to improve the team and excite Mets fans.
“I look at an owner who is worth $14.5 billion, and was looked down on by some owners because he was going to obliterate the market,” Moose said. “And we know it’s a passion play because he’s a long-time Mets fan…but aren’t you surprised that we’re sitting here at this stage and all they’ve signed is May and McCann? I am.”
