This is normally a spot to get basic injury updates ahead of the weekend's matchup, but the Seahawks got some massive, bizarre news Friday afternoon that trumps anything else.
A shock retirment
Seattle's starting center, Connor Williams, retired. Williams is 27 and started every game this season for Seattle after coming back from a torn ACL in December.
There is no word yet as to why Williams retired. He did not seem to be playing particularly poorly. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said Williams was retiring for a "personal reasons" and declined to divulge more information.
Seattle will now turn to second-year offensive lineman Olu Oluwatimi, a fifth-round draft pick out of Michigan in 2023. He's played 132 career snaps on offense and four this season. It's worth noting that Drake Nugent, Michigan's center last year, is on the 49ers' practice squad.
49ers statuses
The 49ers have quite a lengthy injury list, and they have a few truly questionable players heading into Sunday.
OUT
CB Charvarius Ward (personal)
P Mitch Wishnowsky (back)
DT Kevin Givens (groin)
Doubtful
CB Darrell Luter Jr. (pelvis)
Questionable
LT Trent Williams (ankle)
DE Nick Bosa (hip)
TE George Kittle (hamstring)
OL Jon Feliciano (knee)
LG Aaron Banks (thigh)
DE Yetur Gross-Matos (knee)'
As he stated early in the week, Bosa did not practice, and will see how he feels Sunday. Shanahan said that Trent Williams was expected to be able to practice Friday but it didn't feel good enough. He's a game-time decision.
The positive side of the equation is that Yetur Gross-Matos will return from injured reserve. With Bosa's status in question, that's a monumental boon. So, too, is the lack of status with Jauan Jennings, who showed up with an ankle injury Thursday. He's good to go.
Seattle's statuses
The Seahawks are in better shape outside of their shock situation at center. They'll have D.K. Metcalf back, and are expecting the return of starting right tackle Abe Lucas. That's a massive addition over the woeful Stone Forsythe.
They will, however, be without their best tight end in Noah Fant, who is out due to a groin injury. Tight end Brady Russell is also out with a foot injury. They'll once again lean on rookie tight end A.J. Barner from Michigan who has struggled with drops thus far.
