49ers suspend De'Vondre Campbell, issue brief statement
The San Francisco 49ers are done with De'Vondre Campbell. But they're not letting the veteran linebacker simply walk away.
Campbell refused to play Thursday night against the Los Angeles Rams after he was drop to fourth in the pecking order behind Dre Greenlaw and Dee Winters. He was ushered away from the bench in the fourth quarter, reportedly (per Jay Glazer) after John Lynch confronted him. Charvarius Ward said after the game he'd likely be cut soon.
Kyle Shanahan said Friday that the team was working through the "semantics" of how to handle Campbell's refusal to play, and now we have an answer. From Lynch, it's a three-game suspension.
“We have suspended De’Vondre Campbell for three games due to conduct detrimental to the team. We will have no further comment on the matter.”
Rather than cutting Campbell, which would theoretically allow him to go to another team, the 49ers chose this route of punishment to prevent that option. Campbell's suspensions almost certainly means he won't be paid for those final three games.
