Is Brock Purdy a system quarterback?

During his miraculous run as a rookie, Purdy outplayed his Mr. Irrelevant title and guided the 49ers to an 8-1 record, after the team went 7-4 with Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo under center. On the latest episode of the 49ers Web Zone “No Huddle” podcast, hosts Brian Renick and Al Sacco discussed if Purdy is a product of a stellar supporting cast. Check out the full episode from Audacy Sports:

“Is he good enough to carry a team?” Renick asked. “Does he have the skillset to carry a team? Because, eventually you’re gonna get to the point to where the quarterback has to carry you. And can Brock Purdy do that? I don’t have an answer. I’m not gonna say, ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ because I have no idea. But I think that is why people are hesitant to just hop on board, full-throat like, ‘Let’s go. Brock Purdy is the guy.’ I think that’s why people are still, like, ‘We really need to see what Trey Lance is.’"

The Niners are optimistic Purdy will be able to return in Week 1 after injuring his elbow in the NFC Championship, but for now San Francisco is letting Lance and free agent signee Sam Darnold duke it out in practice.

San Francisco will still have a star-studded roster this fall, but perhaps we'll learn something new about Purdy this season.
