The 49ers have improved their already formidable defensive line by adding pass rusher Randy Gregory in a trade with the Denver Broncos.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network broke the news.

Adam Schefter of ESPN provided the compensation details.

Gregory had been set to be released by Denver on Wednesday but the 49ers made an offer to the Broncos liking before the cut was formally processed. Gregory, who has 19.5 career sacks, played only 10 games for the Broncos over the last two seasons after leaving the Cowboys in free-agency in 2022 when he signed a $70 million contract with Denver.

According to Schefter, the 49ers won't be on the hook for much of what is remaining of that hefty deal.

The addition of Gregory bolsters the 49ers EDGE pass rushing depth opposite of Nick Bosa. Bosa has been generating pressure but has only one sack in four games and the 49ers defense overall has only recorded nine sacks, which ranks them tied for 22nd in the NFL.
