From the latest updates provided by John Lynch Tuesday, it sounds like Trey Lance’s job to lose entering the 2023 season.
The 49ers general manager spoke to reporters at the NFL Draft scouting combine in Indianapolis and gave updates on Brock Purdy and Lance. While Purdy could get surgery next week on his elbow, Lance is back to doing individual work on the 49ers practice fields.
So, what about Jimmy G and Tom Brady? Lynch was also asked about the veteran quarterbacks during his lengthy and informative Q&A.
Last season, the 49ers went through an awkward breakup then makeup with Garoppolo, signing him to a one-year, incentive-laden deal. Garoppolo did a solid job in his 10 starts, but his Week 13 foot/ankle injury opened the door for Purdy, who’s great performance made Jimmy G expendable.
It doesn’t sound like the 49ers and Garoppolo will be finding a way to get back together this offseason.
“What I know is we won a lot of football games with Jimmy,” Lynch said. “I admire, we admire his toughness. We admire the teammate that he was, so I know everyone wants to talk about some discourse and all that, but I do believe that it’s probably run its course, but I think we leave with nothing but fond memories of Jimmy and Jimmy’s going to go play good football for someone.”
Though Brady has retired (again), many are still speculating that the 45-year-old could unretire (again) and perhaps stabilize the uncertain situation in Santa Clara. Lynch doused any chances of those rumors firing up again with his comments Tuesday.
“I sent him a text when he retired,” Lynch said. “He was a teammate for about three weeks at one point, so I sent him a text, just congratulations on one of the greatest careers that I’ve ever seen in any sport. And I wished him the best, so we’ll leave it at that.”
