Mike McGlinchey secured the bag, and it wasn’t with San Francisco.
Shortly after the NFL’s free agency tampering window opened at 9 a.m. PT on Monday, the right tackle reportedly agreed to a big contract to join the Denver Broncos. According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, McGlinchey and the Broncos have come to terms on a five-year, $87.5 million contract with more than $50 million guaranteed.
Once 49ers tight end George Kittle saw the news, he joked that McGlinchey will be paying for drinks the next time he’s around.
The No. 9 overall pick in 2018 out of Notre Dame, McGlinchey never quite achieved franchise tackle status with the 49ers. Considering All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams is set to count $27.2 million against the cap this season, keeping McGlinchey around this offseason was viewed as an afterthought.
Last week, the 49ers announced a two-year contract extension for Colton McKivitz, who was a backup the last three seasons but could step into the starting right tackle role on a budget.
McGlinchey joins a Broncos squad that is doing some major re-tooling after last year’s failed experiment with Russell Wilson at quarterback.
It marked the second high-profile 49ers departure from Monday’s early action, as former quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo also reportedly agreed to a three-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders. Contracts can officially be signed once the NFL league year resets at 1 p.m. PT Wednesday.
