Jed York: Shanahan, Lynch not going anywhere
The 49ers' putrid 2024 campaign has left the door open for rampant speculation, whether or not that speculation is founded in reality. More specifically, it fueled take-firing from the hip about Kyle Shanahan going somewhere else in a trade, like the Chicago Bears. Ill-informed takesmanship really is an art form.
This led to Jed York being interviewed by the San Francisco Standard before Monday night's game. He stated the obvious: Shanahan and general manager John Lynch are "not going anywhere."
Shanahan was asked about York's comments on Tuesday morning's conference call, and echoed similar sentiments to earlier this season, when he laughed off the speculation.
“I’ve got a good relationship with Jed, and we speak almost every day, so hearing stuff in the media doesn’t really change much for me,” Shanahan said. "It’s more what I have between him and myself.”
“Jed is very easy to talk to. We’ve known each other here for, now eight years, and we feel very fortunate for how he is through the good and the bad. And the communication really never changes, regardless of what’s going on.”
What people fail to understand about the reality of front office dynamics is that they are entirely dependent on the owner, and their relationship with the head coach and general manager.
It is abundantly clear in talking to York, and the way he has operated in relation to Shanahan and Lynch, that he has heaps of faith in Shanahan, a coach who would be hired tomorrow if let out the door.
York is also scarred, understandably, from pushing Jim Harbaugh out and letting Chip Kelly and Jim Tomsula in. He knows the asset he has in Shanahan and will not move on from him unless there are clear, repeated signs over multiple years that the 49ers aren't competitive.
