Before every 49ers home game, Niners legend Jerry Rice gets an up close look at the squad.
Rice can be spotted – usually wearing a big gold 49ers helmet chain – chopping it up with the players on the field before going back to his seat nearby and signing autographs for fans. Over the past few weeks, he’s kept a close eye on rookie quarterback Brock Purdy and been impressed.
Rice joined 95.7 The Game’s “The Morning Roast” Friday to break down the 49ers-Cowboys Divisional Round matchup on Sunday. The Hall of Fame wide receiver said he’d love to catch passes from Purdy.
“Man, this dude,” Rice told hosts Bonta Hill and Joe Shasky. “I sit and I watch him during warmups. The velocity behind his throws – I mean, tight missiles, man. I’m, like, man I could catch that. The rotation on the ball, but his composure, his leadership, his command of the huddle. I realize this guy is only 23. Having a good time out there and making good decisions, can make all the throws. He’s gonna get the ball into the hands of his playmakers. Just having a fantastic season.”
The 49ers will enter Sunday’s game as 3.5-point favorites and are one win away from the NFC championship. Rice thinks the Niners have a chance to do something special this season.
“I’m hoping with the San Francisco 49ers this year, you look at the defense that we have, you look at the offense, the team is really playing well. I think we have a great opportunity. It’s gonna start Sunday. Because you don’t wanna look too far down the road. We’ve gotta take care of the Dallas Cowboys.”
