Less than a day after the 49ers won their 13th straight regular season game, the team on Friday announced multiyear extensions for coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch.
The terms of the extensions weren’t announced, but you figure Lynch and Shanahan will be here for years to come, as they previously signed extensions that kept them with the franchise through 2025.
95.7 The Game’s John Dickinson joined “Steiny & Guru” after the news broke on Friday and said the organization is clearly happy with the direction of the team.
“We’ll see if John Lynch’s deal is in line with Shanahan’s exactly, but that would mean for Shanahan he’s at least under contract for another five or six years from right this second in 2023,” Dickinson said. “And why not? This team looks like they’re primed to make another deep run and they look like they’ve found their quarterback. They’ve been able to turn the worm here for three of the last four years. I think Jed York is rewarding the stability and overall success that the 49ers have had for three of the last four years.”
Lynch and his staff have been masterful at constructing a star-studded roster and finding gems late in drafts. Though they whiffed on the Trey Lance pick in 2021, the Niners are so stacked that it doesn't matter, as Brock Purdy has assumed the role of young franchise quarterback on a rookie scale contract.
Including the postseason, Shanahan holds a 61-49 record with the 49ers since he and Lynch’s regime took over in 2017. They have made three NFC Championship games, including the past two, and also made it to the Super Bowl with a healthy Jimmy Garoppolo in 2019.
Shanahan might rub some people the wrong way with his confidence and lack of accountability at times, but you can’t deny that he has the 49ers playing his style with a lot of selfless superstars in the fold.
“This is a massive vote of confidence from Jed York to Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch,” Dickinson said. “Go get it done because you're taken care of regardless of what happens. It’s an ultimate pay-it-forward type of move.”
