In a surprise development, Brock Purdy was on the practice field for the 49ers during the portion of the session open to the media this afternoon, suggesting he has an opportunity to play in Sunday's game against the Bengals.
A return to practice even in a limited form is a tell that Purdy has at least cleared an initial hurdle toward a possible return to play. Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Wednesday there was enough time left in the week for Purdy to be deemed healthy enough to be active.
If Purdy can't go on Sunday, Sam Darnold would get the start for the 49ers who have suddenly lost two straight after opening the season 5-0.
