The 49ers apparently weren't finished beefing up their offensive line when they signed Trent Williams and helped him to become the highest-paid OL in league history.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, another multi-time Pro Bowler and veteran on the line is coming to town.
Mack has been selected for the Pro Bowl six times, most recently in 2018 with the Falcons, and is entering his age-36 season in 2021 after seven years with the Browns and five with the Falcons. In both of those stints, as Rapoport mentioned, he's played under the guidance of Kyle Shanahan, who was Cleveland's offensive coordinator in 2014 and Atlanta's offensive coordinator in 2015 and 2016.
The rushing attack that made San Francisco such a powerhouse offensive in 2019 (second in rushing yards, first in rushing touchdowns, ninth in yards per attempt) faded away in 2020, as they were just average (15th in rushing yards, 10th in rushing touchdowns, 16th in yards per attempt).
With Ben Garland and Hroniss Grasu both impending free agents and reports that Weston Richburg is likely to retire due to injuries, Mack fills a whole in the center of the line that the 49ers needed to address.
If you paid attention to the evolving Trent Williams story, though, you probably knew that this was coming. Williams teased this news on his Instagram story, as noted by ESPN's Dianna Russini.
